Trataka mediation is the process of staring into the flame of a candle continuously. It allows the mind to become more focused on a single task and go into a heightened state of awareness. Studies show this type of meditation may improve spatial and working memory. Along with a reduction in mind wandering and visual strain. One potential way trataka leads to these benefits is by impacting intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGC). Another pathway that trataka may be having beneficial effects is by reducing activity of the Default Mode Network (DMN) which is the area of the brain where mind wandering occurs. Large scale studies are further required

In any case - candles are relaxing and sensual and making your own can be even more meditative!

Candle Making - Lavender Citrus Soy Candle RecipeYield: 2 medium candles (about 8 oz each)

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups soy wax flakes

  • 1 tablespoon lavender essential oil

  • 1 tablespoon grapefruit essential oil

  • 1 tablespoon orange essential oil

Supplies:

  • Medium pot (for double boiler method)

  • Heat-safe glass container (to melt wax)

  • Plastic pouring jug

  • Thermometer

  • 2-4 wicks

  • 2 heat-safe glass candle containers

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the double boiler. Fill a pot with water and bring to a gentle simmer. Place a heat-safe glass container on top, making sure it does not touch the water directly.

  2. Melt the wax. Add 4 cups soy wax flakes to the glass container. Stir occasionally as the wax melts completely.

  3. Cool to fragrance temperature. Remove from heat once melted and allow the wax to cool to 130–140°F, using a thermometer to check.

  4. Add essential oils. Stir in 1 tablespoon lavender, 1 tablespoon grapefruit, and 1 tablespoon orange essential oil. Mix thoroughly to ensure even scent distribution. Remember you can always change the essential oils to your aromatic preference!

  5. Secure the wick. Place the wick in the center of each candle jar. Pour a small amount of wax into each jar to anchor the wick base. Let this set and harden for about 5–10 minutes.

  6. Pour remaining wax. Transfer the remaining wax to a plastic pouring jug. Slowly pour into the jars while holding the wick centered. Leave about ½ inch at the top.

  7. Let cure. Allow candles to cool undisturbed for 24 hours. Trim the wick to ¼ inch before burning.
